University spinout (USO) are an important source of innovation however concerns are raised about the mediocre survival rate in general and even a lower rate for those to grow larger.
To analyse the situation and better understand the dynamic growth process of university spin-outs (USOs) in China, authors Y. Zhou and T. Minshall investigated the interconnections between innovation problem-solving and the required configuration of innovation capabilities in four growth phases.

- Two Market
- Three Financial
- Four Industrial
Some of the findings included:
USOs in China appear to be able to achieve high growth when:
- there is a technology-push model with a state-of-the-art core tech, but not too leading-edge
- leaders have a strong integrative capability for knowledge, culture and people
- there is an effective alliance with the parent university in R&D
- access to healthy corporate governance
